Avocado are one of the most popular superfoods! Instead of buying them at the grocery store, try growing your own organically at home.
Avocado At Home
Springtime is almost here! Kick off this season by growing an avocado tree in your own home. It's a great way to take a step into gardening and see the fruits of your labor grow in front of your eyes. All you need to start is an avocado pit, toothpicks, and a small ceramic dish!
It's The Pits
First you will need an avocado pit, cut the avocado in half and remove the pit with a sharp knife. Once removed, wash any excess avocado off of the pit in cold water and wipe it down. It will be sitting in water for a few weeks, so it needs to be clean.
Planting The Roots
Next, you will need to root the pit! This is essential for the proper growth of the avocado tree. Root it with the pointy side facing up, the stem and leaves will sprout from the top while the roots will come out the bottom.
You will then need to gather your toothpicks. Begin by inserting one into the side, it will need to be pushed in far enough so that you can lift the pit by the pick. Repeat this process with the other three toothpicks, spacing them evenly around the pit.
Prepping The Pit
Place the avocado pit with the picks in the ceramic dish. You will want the picks to be resting on the outside of the dish with the pit suspended over the center. Fill the dish up with fresh water so that the pit is about halfway covered.
TLC Is Key
Change the water every other day or so, the pit constantly needs to be halfway submerged in water.
The Sunny Side
The best place for healthy growth is on a sunny windowsill! Keep an eye on the pit and ensure fresh water is provided. Until the pit becomes a sapling in soil, it must be submerged in water at all times.
Patience In Planting
After about 3 weeks or so, the top of the pit should split open and a stem will shoot up! The roots will then begin to appear and leaves will follow a few weeks later. The whole process will take about three months, remember nature takes its sweet time!
