We all know drinking sugary drinks in excess is detrimental to our health, but drinking Coca Cola is proven to help with many health-related problems.
The beloved drink is a nice treat, especially when served ice-cold on a warm day. The fizzy bubbles and sweet taste are a familiar friend to many of us, but little did we know the ingredients in this drink could help with issues such as loosening a stomach blockage. And according to WebMD, it also helps treat asthma. The pop can also add some serious volume to your hair!
Loosen A Stomach Blockage
According to researchers who published their results in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, the acid in coca cola helps to break down stomach blockages. The liquid has an acidity that is similar to gastric acids, which are thought to be useful in fiber digestion. Coca Cola also contains sodium bicarbonate, which also helps loosen stomach blockages when mixed with carbon dioxide. An Athens University study found Coca Cola useful in treating stomach blockages in 91.3 percent of cases. The cola is even used in hospitals to release blockages before moving onto more invasive treatments.
Add It To Beans To Prevent Gas
Remember this one the next time you're cooking a black bean soup! Add a can of Coca Cola to the beans as they soak. The compounds in the soda work by neutralizing the gas-causing properties, so you won't have to worry about flatulence (or the bloat!) that eating beans cause.
We all have our go-to drink when we're feeling nauseous. But, you may want to bypass the ginger ale and fizzy water for a can of Coke instead. Coca Cola may work better than other beverages because it contains an anti-nausea compound called phosphoric acid. According to Dr. Lawrence Szarka, a gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., Phosphoric acid is an ingredient in the over-the-counter anti-nausea medicine Emetrol. The carbonation in cola also helps calm the stomach by reducing the total acidity of the stomach.
Dislodge Food From The Throat
This remedy is helpful for getting out that pesky piece of food from your throat. The carbonation in Coca Cola helps break down the food, making it manageable to swallow. The soda also works in another way to help clear your throat and make it easier for you to breathe. As you drink the soda, the carbonation in your stomach pushes up on the blocked food, helping release it from your throat.
Helps Treat Asthma
Coca Cola has probably helped as an afternoon pick me up or as a coffee replacement at least a few times over the years due to its caffeine content, but the same caffeine is also shown to help with treating asthma symptoms. Caffeine is similar to the drug theophylline, which is taken to open up lung airways in a person suffering from breathlessness, wheezing, coughing, and other asthma symptoms. It acts as a bronchodilator and can improve lung function for up to four hours.
Your Hair Benefits, Too!
In addition to helping clear your throat and helping with nausea, it has some great hair benefits as well! By giving your locks a Coca Cola rinse, you'll be able to add some volume to your tresses! The phosphoric acid in the cola helps to tighten the hair's cuticles and make hair look smoother and softer. It also gives hair more volume for a just-from-the-beach tousled look.
