The warm summer months mean spending most of your time in a combination of bathing suits, shorts, sundresses and tank tops. But for people suffering from varicose veins, the long hot days often bring embarrassment and misery. WebMD explains that varicose veins are large, twisted veins near the surface of your skin. Even though they're generally not dangerous, they can potentially lead to more serious health problems in the future.
If you're one of those people who chooses to cover up your arms and legs instead of wearing what makes you comfortable because of varicose veins - there is good news! This summer you can happily break out the shorts and skirts after trying these effective varicose vein home remedies. The best part is that you don't have to spend thousands on professional treatments, like the ones listed by the Mayo Clinic, to get lasting results! Get ready to sunbathe shame-free.
Start Wiping On The Mud Packs
It may feel strange wiping "dirt" onto your legs, but a fine clay mudpack can drastically reduce the appearance of varicose veins. The fine clay works as a type of compression treatment - as the clay dries, it tightens around your skin. This constricts dilated blood vessels near the surface of your skin and promotes blood flow.
First you'll need to mix the fine clay with water and apply to your legs before going to bed (make sure you use the extra set of sheets). When you wake up the next morning, wash off the clay with warm water in the shower and pat your legs dry!
Take A Gulp Of Apple Cider Vinegar
Outside of the kitchen, apple cider vinegar can be used as an extremely effective treatment for varicose veins! You can try applying undiluted apple cider vinegar on your skin (directly over the varicose vein) and lightly massaging the area. You'll need to repeat this before bed and as soon as you wake up for 2-4 months to see the best results!
Another way to to use apple cider vinegar is by adding two teaspoons to a glass of water, and stir thoroughly. Drink this mixture twice a day for at least one month and you'll see the dark veins disappear right before your eyes.
The Cayenne Pepper "Miracle"
Most Americans don't know that cayenne pepper is widely considered to be a "miracle treatment" for varicose veins in cultures all over the world. Not only is the potent spice is packed with vitamins and bioflavonoids, but it also drastically increases blood circulation and dulls the pain of even the worst varicose veins.
If you're brave you can try adding one teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder to a cup of hot water. Be sure to stir it extremely well and drink it three times a day for roughly two months, or until you achieve the desired results!
Get Ready For The Green Tomato Sizzle
Next time you're at the grocery store, pick up a few green tomatoes. Wash and cut them into slices (rings) and apply them right on the puffiest parts of your varicose veins. If you're the type that needs to be up and moving, you can keep the slippery slices in place with medical bandages. Once you start to feel a burning or tingling sensation, remove the green tomato slices and wash your veins with cold water.
For the best results, do this five times a day (preferably in a row) for two weeks. After completing this tomato treatment, the large nodes, dark color and painful swelling will all vanish!
The Olive Oil Express
Open your kitchen cabinet right now and grab the olive oil! It's a little-known secret that olive oil is great for increasing circulation, which reduces the visibility, pain and inflammation of your frustrating varicose veins. You can try massaging equal amounts of warmed olive oil and Vitamin E oil directly on the veins for roughly five minutes. Do this twice daily for two months to see the best results.
Another awesome olive oil trick is to mix four drops of cypress essential oil with two teaspoons of warm olive oil and follow the same steps as above. No matter which mixture you try, your veins will disappear for good!
Get Creative With Witch Hazel
Witch hazel can be used for everything from getting rid of undereye circles, to helping soothe a sore throat. But the powerful herb can also be used to strengthen blood vessels and eliminate the look and feel of varicose veins. Try soaking a washcloth in witch hazel and placing it directly over the affected area for at least 15 minutes. For severe varicose veins, repeat this treatment three times a day for at least two months.
If that doesn't float your boat, you can also fill your bathtub with lukewarm water and add 20 drops of distilled witch hazel. Soak just your legs in the solution for 15-30 minutes. After the time has passed, wash your legs with clean cool water and pat them dry. Do this once a day for one or two months!
Boil Down That Parsley
Besides its common use as a garnish, parsley is also great for treating varicose veins. The tiny herb is chock-full of Vitamin C and rutin, which has been proven to strengthen capillaries and reduce the physically and emotionally painful effects of varicose veins.
You can eat raw parsley, or you can try boiling a handful of chopped parsley in one cup of water for five minutes. Then you'll remove the mixture from the heat, cover it and allow the solution to cool down slightly. Strain it and add one drop of rose and marigold essential oil. Place the solution in the refrigerator to cool. Once it's totally chilled, apply the solution to the affected area with a cottonball daily for at least three months.
