Homes just aren't the same as they used to be. Now, oversized homes with little personal meaning are common, and handmade homes full of love and dedication are rare!
But one family stumbled upon their great grandfather's home and realized just how special it was....
In 1916, one Reddit user's great grandfather took a trip to his local Sears store for an important purchase. He was going to buy a home from the Sears Home Kit catalog!
This may seem unusual in today's day and age of customizing everything, but back in the day, home kits were relatively normal.
With a reasonable cost of $1,062.00, his great grandfather bought the house kit, rolled up his sleeves and constructed a home for his family that would endure the test of time!
Over 100 years later, his great grandchildren embarked on a project that would've made him proud - they were going to refurbish the interior of the home, tune up the exterior and bring it back to its former glory!
The young man shared the news on Imgur for the world to see! Their restoration project quickly caught fire online and was spread to all corners of the country.
"In 1916 my great-grandfather built his house from a Sears home kit. 100 years later we've restored it to its original beauty."
After posting his great grandfather's home on the Internet, countless others chimed in to say their families also purchased a Sears Home Kit house and they are still standing!
With a little elbow grease and vision, he and his family members repainted the inside and adorned it with antique decorations and furniture that were as close to the early 1900s version as possible!
But none of the rooms were as impressive as the dining room - this space was a special side project for the family, who consulted older relatives to make sure their design was spot-on.
"This is the room that we wanted to look as original as possible. The furniture is all antique and the decor and colors are similar to the original look according to family members."
They did an excellent job, inside and out! But this room, in particular, is a time capsule that allows us all to take a peek as to what life was like over 100 years ago.
Although the days of the Sears Home Kit are long gone, there are still other companies that offer the same thing! In 2017, you can have a home that's built with love, determination and your own two hands!
