After Social Pressure Disney Reveals Jasmine's New Outfit, Not Everyone's Happy About It

Disney has stirred up quite a ruckus by changing some of their lovable characters' costumes. People have flocked to social media to voice their concerns about the revamped look for one of the Disney princesses.
Many who look forward to the character meet and greets at Disney World and Disney Land were apparently disappointed, too.
Pocahontas received a fresh look with a costume that is more ornate. It features shell details and beading, plus she's wearing a new necklace and hair accessory. In person, it's quite impressive, fans say.
Mulan's costume upgrade went from her outfit worn during the "matchmaker" scene in the movie to a more lavish costume. It is a combination of the previous outfit and the dress that she wears towards the end of her movie. No one has really commented about her change.
But the following princess' costume alteration has caused quite an uproar...
Jasmine is one of the most popular Disney princesses, recognized by her long dark hair and turquoise Arabian garb. Ever since she first appeared on screen in 1992, she has traditionally worn harem pants and a tube top.
However, she too recently went through a costume change. Some say it was altered after complaints of it being overly revealing - while others claim it was just time for a fresh look.
The new look has her sporting a one-piece pants and dress combo that definitely covers more skin. Her partner Aladdin also received a more ornate, elaborate and sophisticated look, making the two appear to be quite regal.
But not many people are complaining about Aladdin's outfit. It's princess Jasmine's new attire that's been infuriating fans - many of which have been expressing their opinions on social media, saying that Disney shouldn't have messed with her classic style.
Critics of Jasmine's old look said baring her midriff wasn't appropriate in a society where girls are to be respectfully raised with the focus on their minds, not their bodies. Others said Jasmine's costume was demeaning to Middle Eastern women who usually cover up most of their bodies.
Layla Stepford wrote a review of the two costumes on FanPop that Princess Jasmine's original costume was "completely inaccurate and offensive to her culture." Layla said Jasmine's outfit didn't represent Arab or Muslim women, but instead was disgraceful. Further, she said Jasmine was not a suitable role model for young girls.
"Jasmine is dressed like a Harem girl instead of a princess. A princess is the daughter of the king who no man is allowed to touch without the king's approval. A harem girl is one of the king's many mistresses. No king would dress his daughter like his mistress. No father would want to see his daughter dressed in that way."
But the critics of Jasmine's new look are tearing it apart. They say the costume is ugly, doesn't reflect her culture and that Disney shouldn't have changed something that many people loved.
Do you agree with the costume change?
