Teenagers Lucy and Maria Aylmer, 18, are best friends to say the least. Lucy, with her flaming red straight hair and porcelain skin, is a bit shyer while her vivacious buddy Maria has thick, curly black hair and a caramel skin tone. While the two are complete opposites in many ways, what they do share is surprising.
Lucy and Maria are sisters. Their stark difference in appearance has caused a lot of uncomfortable conversations with people who couldn't believe they were related. However, it goes deeper than just appearances.
Maria loves fashion and is very bubbly, while Lucy prefers to stay out of the limelight and is a bit shy around people she's just met. They even have completely different hobbies and interests. But one thing remains they same, they are not just sisters, but twins.
The teens live in England with their family, and were both born to the same parents, Donna and Vince Aylmer. Their story has been told and retold many times to people who first meet them and are in disbelief.
People often think the girls are joking around or trying to play a trick on them when they reveal their relationship. Lucy was even bullied at school because of their blatant differences. She tears up during an interview with Inside Edition just talking about it.
It isn't uncommon for babies born to biracial parents to have their own look or to be a beautiful blend of both parents. In this case, Lucy looks like their dad, Vince, who is caucasian, while Maria resembles their mom Donna, who is half Jamaican. In fact, some of their siblings resemble the two different twins. Maria said most people are astounded to learn that the girls have the same set of parents.
"A lot of people are in shock ... They say they don't believe us."
In fact, when the twins turned 10, Lucy said she didn't feel like a twin anymore, because they looked so different. So even though their mom had dressed them in matching clothes all their lives, Lucy decided to break out on her own and develop her own sense of casual style, dressing differently than her twin.
