54-Year-Old Dad Passes, 14 Years Later His Kids Find A Secret Note He Never Showed Anyone

In August of 2003, Laura and David Carney received some awful news about their father Mick who lived in Limerick, PA.
While out for a drive, Mick's car was hit by a 17-year-old girl who ran a red light in her SUV after being distracted by her cell phone. Mick was only 54-years-old at the time, and his unexpected death affected his children in a very profound way.
It was almost 14 years after their father's tragic passing however, that they came across a hidden note that he had never shared with anyone.
In reality, the note was actually a list, handwritten by their dad on lined paper that had since yellowed and aged from being tucked away in a small leather pouch. It was a serendipitous discovery made by David who was unpacking various objects after his move to a new house.
Dated with the year of Laura's birth, 1978, when Mick himself was only 29-years-old, the list was titled:
"Things I would like to do in my lifetime."
The siblings soon realized that they had stumbled upon their late father's bucket-list which contained about 60 things that he wanted to accomplish during his lifetime.
The find was bittersweet as one can imagine, but for Laura especially, who is a writer and editor in New Jersey, it meant an unexpected push in a new direction. Along with her brother David's help, she decided to check-off all of the unfinished things that their dad had set out to do.
She started a blog called My Father's List, and an Instagram page by the same name, to document the journey and their mission for anyone who might be interested.
One of the first things Laura completed from the bucket-list was running 10 straight miles. This was not too terribly hard to accomplish given that some of the other unfinished items include talking with the president and the pope, having a personal tennis court, and recording 5 songs.
Regardless of its absurdity and playfulness, the bucket-list has become a way for both Laura and David to connect with their father in a way they had never expected.
It's also a way for the two to try new things that they otherwise might not have before. There are two things on the list that will have to remain undone however. Mick wished to live a happy and healthy life till the year 2020, and to dance at his grandchildren's wedding...
Laura has also embraced another mission in life; to help raise awareness about distracted driving so that other families don't have to go through the same loss she did. It's a tall order in this day and age of cell phones and text messages, but much like her father, she believes in going after the unexpected and in that we wish her luck!
