The moment Eli Thompson was born, his mother Brandi knew something was off. Although he had all ten fingers and ten toes, there was something missing from his face!
After the initial excitement of his birth wore off, doctors carefully approached Brandi and told her that Eli had a condition called congenital arhinia - something that just 30 people have been diagnosed with in recent history! The went on to explain that Eli was born without a nose, nasal cavity and olfactory system.
The cards were stacked against Eli from the start, but his loved ones recognized how much of a fighter he was...
Caring for Eli was a challenge to say the least - but his parents were devoted to their son! Every nap time check-up, long night in the hospital and trip to the doctor's office was more than worth it to ensure the health of their baby boy.
Brandi TODAY that Eli's condition didn't change their love for him.
"We think he is perfect as is. When it's your baby, it doesn't matter what's wrong, you love him, regardless."
Eli's first birthday passed, and then the second rolled around. It seemed as though their little boy could overcome anything thrown his way. Then the unthinkable happened....
On June 3, Eli's father Jeremy, took to Facebook to share the devastating news.
"We lost our little buddy last night. I'll never be able to make sense of why this happened, and this will hurt deeply for a long time. But I'm so blessed to have had this beautiful boy in my life!
He finished his race a lot earlier than we would have liked, but it was God's time to bring him back home. I'll forever look forward to seeing him at the gates of Heaven waiting on me to give me another one of his famous fist bumps! I love you little man. Rest in peace with my Father."
Eli passed away from complications due to his condition. One moment he was living life as an adorable toddler, the next he was gone forever.
To help ease the burden of their son's memorial, Eli's parents set up a GoFundMe account. Donations from all over the world started to pour in and within a matter of days they surpassed the fund's goal of $12,000!
Nothing can ever bring their boy back, but at least they have the memory of his beautiful smile and soul to smile back on.
