As fans across the globe are gearing up for Katy Perry's release of her newest album "Witness," Katy showed a different side of her personality. The California-born singer was bold enough to open up about an incredibly personal aspect of her life.
In a recent interview, the pop star revealed a hidden secret that left everyone completely shocked.
As part of her "Witness" promotion, Katy chose to be the subject of a live YouTube stream, letting fans into her everyday life, from sleeping, to yoga classes to her meetings. Her life became incredibly visible, letting her admirers and fans see into both the mundane everyday routine and the exciting life of a superstar.
But, it was what she confessed during a meeting with licensed therapist Siri Sat Nam Singh that left fans on edge.
During the meeting, Katy admitted that she used to have suicidal thoughts, a heartbreaking truth all caught on the live stream. She goes on to tell her therapist that she regrets feeling that way, and how she is focusing on being loved.
"I feel ashamed that I would have those thoughts, feel that low and that depressed. You can be right or you can be loved, I just want to be loved."
Katy, who is visibly upset, goes on to say how her two identities differ. Katy Perry, born Katheryn Hudson, lets us into how difficult it can be to have both a private and public image.
Katy says she still struggles with having dual identities, and that the reality of her situation isn't easy. This led her to want to leave her public persona behind, and return to her original born identity of Katheryn Hudson.
She says that a big part of chopping off her hair earlier this year was to try and separate herself from "Katy Perry."
The singer candidly confessed:
"I so badly want to be Katheryn Hudson that I don't even want to look like Katy Perry anymore sometimes, and that is a little bit of why I cut my hair.
When it comes to being herself, Katy is on a quest to becoming more authentic and true to herself.
"I'm a bit more nerdy than everybody thinks I am. I'm a big goofball. The fantasy of Katheryn went into Katy and made this bigger than life personality."
After watching the video, Katy's fans took to social media to show their support.
Dr. Singh says he was caught off guard that Katy was able to be so transparent with him during the therapy session. He says that famous celebrities aren't usually as honest as Katy was.
"Honestly, I was [surprised] for an artist of that magnitude to be so open and vulnerable. I'm really having that experience with the majority of people that I work with because I think that I create a safe space for them to be themselves where I'm not judging them."
You can watch a clip from her interview in the emotional video below.
It's incredible that Katy was able to be so open about such a taboo subject, even while promoting her latest release. Her fans appreciate her realness surrounding her situation, and will continue to support her. Katy's perseverance through her struggles, even in the limelight, are something to be admired.
