Mom Gets Worst News At Baby's Ultrasound, Then Realizes Decision She Made Is The Wrong One

Pregnancy is an exciting time in any woman's life, and the anticipation of that very first ultrasound is almost unimaginable for anyone who hasn't already experienced it for themselves. This is when motherhood truly seems to get real- it's not just a stick telling you that you are pregnant, or a doctor confirming the news, it's the actual baby, kicking and moving around on the screen, letting you know that life is about to change for the better!
Katie Danielle Whiddon, who lives in Texas with her partner Cole, went through those same feelings when she was pregnant with her first child back in 2013. At the time, Katie was only 18, and more than happy to eat right and stay healthy to make sure that her baby was as perfect as could be.
The Universe had a different definition for "perfect" however, when at Katie's 18-week ultrasound, she not only found out that she was having a baby boy, but also learned some alarming news about his condition in vitro.
Apparently, the fetus was showing signs of two birth defects called phocomelia syndrome and amelia. Phocomelia is a congenital disorder that involves the malformation of limbs, and amelia is a birth defect in which a baby is born missing one or more limbs. Katie recalls laying on the ultrasound bed, and wondering what it all meant.
"... I went immediately numb inside ... While I was laying there, reality hit me right in the heart. I started balling my eyes out.' 'My baby doesn't have any legs, and only upper arms? MY baby?' she recalled thinking. 'Things like this don't happen to me! Things like this don't happen to my family! Why me? Why MY baby!!! Why PERIOD!!!'"
At first Katie wasn't sure if she should continue on with the pregnancy, but after talking to her family - she changed her mind. She realized that would be the wrong decision.
The baby, whom she named Camden, finally arrived later that October, bringing with him unimaginable joy, as well as a lot of anxiety relating to his condition. Well, it's been almost four years since that day and what Katie has learned from Camden in this time is that happiness doesn't always require limbs!
Camden has grown to be a happy and healthy child who is able to do almost everything that any other 4-year-old can do. Katie and Cole know by now not to ever assume that Camden can't do something just because he doesn't have any arms or legs.
Katie explained to Daily Mail:
"I know that most people look at Camden and think, poor child. But when he gets comfortable in his surroundings and starts doing things on his own, everyone always gathers around to watch! ... He mostly feeds himself, gets around the house by himself, sits on the potty by himself, climbs up stairs, and so many other things we thought that he would never be able to do."
And it's one of Camden's amazing acts which Katie caught on video, that has left the internet speechless! Katie, who had her third child just this past July, noticed that Camden grew concerned when the baby started crying. But instead of panicking or getting mommy or daddy, Camden picked up the baby's pacifier and put it in the baby's mouth which instantly made him stop crying.
Katie claims this isn't a once in a while thing; that big brother Camden is always more than eager to help out with any tasks necessary in taking care of the baby. She told Daily Mail:
"Camden is always right there to give him his pacifier and wipe the spit up off of his mouth ... This time Jaxton was crying and I said out loud to him that I was getting his pacifier. Then Camden said, 'I got it Mommy!' So I grabbed my phone and ran over there to capture the moment."
For Katie, few things in life compare to seeing Camden thrive in spite of his physical shortcomings. With a wonderful support system from friends and family, Camden is sure to continue doing more and more amazing things. To make things easier however, Katie is hoping to get Camden prosthetics for his legs soon, and once he is a bit older, prosthetics for his arms too if he so chooses.
Camden has made it clear that he can still be a caring big brother and an awesome mommy's helper, no matter what.
